A Statement for Our Community
Over the past few weeks the Friends of Allan Gardens paused to listen, learn and look within our organization to better understand our role as part of the problem and part of the solution. We’re determined to do better and commit to moving forward as allies, collaborators and partners in the creation of a more equitable, just and inclusive park.
Advocacy for Allan Gardens is also advocacy for social equity, justice and inclusion. Ensuring that Black people, Indigenous people and other people of colour can participate fully and meaningfully on their own terms in the park requires us to publicly recognize and oppose systemic racism in Allan Gardens.
These are our first steps of many:
– Audit current priorities, identify inclusivity and equity actions, and establish performance measures;
– Enhance the diversity of our board, staff and volunteers;
– Research community experiences and needs to guide outreach and allyship strategies and actions.
We welcome and value your feedback and suggestions. We are listening. Please get in touch – info@friendsofallangardens.ca
